Toronto Police say a man in his 20s is dead after an early Thursday morning shooting at Yorkdale Shopping Centre
Det. Sajeev Nair told reporters in an update on mall property that the shooting happened just after 6 a.m. Global News captured images of the scene near the Indigo book store area of the mall.
Nair said officers had found the man outside Entrance 3, and that there were multiple shots fired.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene, Nair said.
He was identified as a man in his 20s but Nair would not release his identity pending family notification.
“This investigation is in its early stages, and we’re working to determine exactly what happened and who’s responsible,” Nair said.
Nair said the mall is open for business and is safe. He asked mall goers to avoid Entrance 3, which is located on the north side of the mall.
Those with vehicles within the crime scene tape area will not be able to access their cars until the scene is processed, Nair said.
He added that investigators are reviewing video footage from the mall.
There is no word on suspects. Anyone with information or dash cam footage of the area around 6:13 a.m. is asked to contact police.
A Yorkdale mall spokesperson extended their “deepest sympathies to the loved ones of the individual who lost their life today.”
“Yorkdale’s enhanced security and surveillance systems operate 24/7 and allow us to respond quickly and assist emergency services, as we did today,” the spokesperson said. “This incident occurred before the shopping centre’s operating hours.”
The spokesperson confirmed the entrance doors on the northeast side will be temporarily closed as well as the northeast parking lot while Toronto police conduct their investigation.
